Bare Root Plants: How to Care for Them Before Planting

Spring planting is around the corner, and bare root trees are a wonderful way to grow your garden. Lighter, less bulky, and eco-friendly, they’re full of potential and ready to thrive once planted.

What is a Bare Root Tree?

Bare root trees are sold without soil around their roots. They may look a little “naked,” but they’re full of life and ready to grow when planted.

Caring for Bare Root Trees Before Planting

Bare root trees can be stored indoors or outdoors, as long as their roots are protected from freezing.

Indoor Storage:

  • Keep roots in a cool, shaded area like a garage or basement

  • Cover the roots with soil, mulch, or sawdust in a ventilated bag or box to maintain moisture

  • Check occasionally to prevent mold

Outdoor Storage:

  • Heel in” the roots by burying them in a shallow trench

  • Cover with soil or mulch for insulation and protection from freezing

  • Avoid direct contact with snow or standing water

Additional Tips:

  • Inspect roots and trim any broken or rotting parts

  • Soak roots 2–4 hours just before planting to rehydrate

Keeping the roots cool and protected ensures they stay healthy and strong until planting.

  • Eco-Friendly: Less plastic and packaging waste
