Crafting Memories: Easy Pumpkin Decorating Ideas for Kids
There’s something special about sitting down with the kids, a table full of craft supplies, and a pile of pumpkins just waiting for a little imagination. Fall is full of big moments — the colors, the harvest, the celebrations — but sometimes the best memories are made in the simple ones: paint-covered fingers, glitter in unexpected places, and proud little smiles over a perfectly decorated pumpkin.
If you’re looking for a fun, no-carve way to decorate pumpkins this fall, here are a few of our favorite creative (and kid-friendly!) pumpkin projects using things you probably already have at home — or can find right here at Schilling’s.
1. Napkin Decoupage Pumpkins
One of our favorite tricks — and surprisingly easy!
Simply tear patterned napkins into smaller pieces, brush on a layer of Mod Podge or watered-down glue, and gently press the napkin pieces onto the pumpkin’s surface. Layer as you go, smoothing with your fingers or a soft brush.
Let dry, then seal with another thin coat of glue for a soft, textured finish.
Try it with: floral napkins, fall leaves, or even old seed catalog pages for a garden-inspired look.
2. Dried Flower Pumpkins
Bring the garden into your fall décor by gluing or Mod Podging dried flowers directly onto your pumpkin.
Tip: Light-colored pumpkins, like Cotton Candy or White Moon Light varieties, make the flowers pop beautifully.
3. Glitter & Paint Pumpkins
Sometimes a little sparkle is exactly what a rainy fall afternoon needs.
Paint the pumpkins in soft, creamy neutrals or bright autumn tones, then brush glue on the stems or along the ribs and sprinkle glitter for a touch of shine.
Metallic or gold glitter adds a hint of elegance — but don’t be afraid to go bold for the kids’ table!
4. Tissue Paper Pumpkins
Tissue paper is great for smaller kids. Tear or cut colorful pieces and layer them onto your pumpkin with glue or Mod Podge. They can go for a rainbow theme, or you can guide them toward classic autumn colors. It’s simple, mess-friendly, and always turns out cheerful.
5. Paint & Personality
Sometimes, all you need is a little paint and a big imagination.
Set out brushes, sponges, or even your fingers and let creativity take over — stripes, polka dots, happy faces, or handprints. If you want to keep it natural, try chalk paint in muted fall tones and finish with a twine bow or a few pressed leaves.
Create & Celebrate
Pumpkin crafting is about more than making something pretty — it’s about slowing down, getting a little messy, and making something together.
So grab a few pumpkins (we have plenty !), spread out some newspaper, and see where creativity takes you.
